From Madonna-Online.ch --

Remember reports saying Madonna was voicing a character of the upcoming new Dreamworks' animation-project 'Madagascar'? She was listed as doing the voice for a character called Gloria, a female hippo to be exact. However many rumours have surrounded this project and its voice-cast with new names popping up for Gloria every other week. So far we've heard of Madonna, then Gwen Stefani and after that it was Jennifer Lopez then it was Madonna back again.

However Dreamworks has finally released an official statement on the voice-cast of the movie and - unfortunately - Madonna is no longer attached to the project. This really comes as no big surprise but it still would have been great to have Madonna doing a voice in a Dreamworks feature.

Still wondering who will be doing the voice for Gloria, the hippo? It's Jada Pinkett-Smith, currently to be seen in cinemas worldwide in 'Matrix Reloaded'.

Subject:Swept Away - Entertainment Weekly DVD/Video Review.
Posted by:liquiddatura.
Time:7:16 pm.

From Entertainment Weekly, 02.14.02 issue -

As all the griping that met its theatrical release underscored, director Guy Ritchie's remake of the castaway romance is far from perfect. Still, it offers more than enough amore, yuks, and skin to fill a piddling hour anda half. (It's looks great, too.) As for Mrs. Ritchie's popularly denigrated portrayal of a bikini-clad shrew who's tamed by, among other things, some seaside S&M and a flying octopus, the Snatch vet gets it about right on his DVD commentary: "Madonna fucking good in this." Subject:Swept Away - Madonna Receives Award.
Posted by:liquiddatura.
Time:4:22 pm.

Ok, so it's not probably the kind of award she'd like to receive. She is dubbed "horrendous" by the 23rd Annual Razzle Awards.

The Daily Mirror reported: We hear that Madonna is less than thrilled with the latest glittering gong heading her way. Her Madge-esty topped the list of the 23rd Annual Razzle Awards, for the Worst Achievement on Screen. An awards spokesman said: "Madonna was horrendous in Swept Away - and is sweeping the board for this year's Worst Actress gong."

Ah, finally - recognition!

Subject:Blue in the Face - Coming to DVD.
Posted by:liquiddatura.
Time:5:17 pm.

The ensemble comedy Blue in the Face - featuring a cast including Roseanne, Harvey Keitel, Michael J. Fox, Lou Reed, Lily Tomlin, and Madonna - is coming to DVD on March 4th. Directed by Paul Auster and Wayne Wang, the improvisational film garnered little more than unenthusiastic to caustic reviews:

"Reportedly the directors held up cards that read 'boring' or 'faster' or 'lighten up' or 'get to the point'. It's too bad that the actors didn't pay attention. Look for Madonna, though, who turns up to deliver a singing telegram. Her performance is nothing to shout about, but her appearance marks the end of the movie and the audience's misery." - Rolling Stone, 10.05.95

Subject:Die Another Day - Notables.
Posted by:liquiddatura.
Time:7:51 pm.

- New nomination:
The 8th Annual AOL Moviegoer Awards nominations have gone out, and Madonna is up for Best Song from a Movie for "Die Another Day". Her competition includes Globe winner U2 ("The Hands that Built America" from Gangs of New York), Eminem ("Lose Yourself" from 8 Mile), Will Smith ("Nod Ya Head" from MIB2), and Chad Kroeger ("Hero" from Spiderman).
You can vote for these awards starting immediately: casting votes at http://AOL.com and http://Moviefone.com

- Theme unappreciated:
Shirley Bassey, vocalist for several James Bond themes had this to say on Madonna's recent interp of the genre theme: "I had to bury my face in my hands. It was terrible. Say what you like about the ones I recorded, people at least found themselves humming them afterwards."
The full article is available at http://www.peoplenews.com/Forward.do?forward=smallbites

- Theme to be on new Madonna album?:
On the as-yet-untitled album expected for release in April, Madonna is said to be releasing "Die Another Day". Not sure if this will be the same version as heard on the soundtrack to the film of the same name, or even if it will indeed make the final cut. Notable fact: Madonna said that she regretted including "American Pie" (her last single that was a soundtrack song) on the international copies of 2000's Music, saying it had nothing to do with the original concept of Music. Like "Die", "Pie" was released as a single and a part of a soundtrack long before her next album came out.

Subject:Evita - Sing-along planned.
Posted by:liquiddatura.
Time:3:28 pm.

Joining the ranks of films that have been showcased as "sing-along" events (as diverse as The Sound of Music and Hedwig and the Angry Inch) is Evita, the 1996 musical that earned Madonna a Golden Globe for Best Actress.

From http://www.madonnalicious.com -

The National Film Theatre in London are screening a special singalong version of Evita on 30 March 2003, during their Alan Parker season.

Several years ago Alan Parker was highly supportive of the British Film Institute in the face of criticism from a few selected quarters for it's staging of the singalong version of The Sound Of Music for the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival (which proved to be the hit of the festival). He said he would be delighted to see a similar staging of his film musical Evita, and has now proved true to his word. So come along and sing your heart out to 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina', 'Oh What A Circus', 'Another Suitcase In Another Hall' and other snappy Lloyd Webber-Rice tunes.

Tickets go on sale to the public from Friday 21 February 2003 (NFT members can priority order via post from 12 February).

Madonnalicious.com will provide booking details nearer the public sale date, or you can visit the National Film Theatre website to check when they are available online.

Subject:Die Another Day - Golden Globe Appearance; Oscar Campaigning.
Posted by:liquiddatura.
Time:10:00 am.

From the New York Daily News:

...Meanwhile, no one seems to know whether Madonna really will attend Sunday's Golden Globes, as announced. [Madonna's representative Liz] Rosenberg said, "Last I heard, she's not going."

As of last night, reps for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the awards, were still saying she will be a presenter. One inside source told us Madonna has set her sights on an Oscar for the "Die Another Day" song, and is trying to do as much publicity in Hollywood as possible.

Subject:Swept Away - Lawsuit.
Posted by:liquiddatura.
Time:1:17 am.

A California judge refused Monday to throw out a 10-million-dollar breach of contract lawsuit alleging that pop superstar Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie stole the idea for the movie "Swept Away." Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Soussan Bruguera denied a request by the couple's lawyer and movie studio Sony Pictures to dismiss the suit brought by movie producer and actor Vincent D'Onofrio. D'Onofrio sued the famous couple in October, claiming that he had given the pair the idea to remake Lina Wertmuller's film "Swept Away" in April 1997 and that he had had several meetings with her agents about it.

The couple made the movie last year, but critics savaged the film, its star, Madonna, and its director, Ritchie, while audiences stayed away in droves, forcing the film off US screens after just a few weeks. D'Onofrio claims in his suit that Madonna and Ritchie -- who directed hits such as "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch" -- excluded him from the production and failed to compensate him for the idea. But Madonna's attorney Marvin Putnam argued that D'Onofrio had no case because no contract was signed between him and the Ritchies, and claimed that D'Onofrio "could not file an action based only on an idea."

"He does not show any contract with Sony," Putnam said. "An idea is not protectable property. If you want (damages), you need a concrete contract," he claimed. But while the judge ruled that there was a case to answer, she told Putnam that she had refused to eliminate particular parts of the action from proceedings as "we need to just proceed to summary judgment."

Summary judgment could well involve a move to dismiss the entire action. The next hearing in the case was set for April 1. After the hearing, Madonna's lawyer said he was confident the case would be thrown out when he brought the motion for summary judgment.

"I didn't expect (the case not to be thrown out)," said Putnam, adding that the next step for dismissal would be largely "procedural." D'Onofrio's attorney, Morris Getzels, said his client had an oral contract with the defendants, a "quasi-contract," and that he would seek 10 million dollars in damages. "Swept Away," a romantic comedy that tells the story of a sailor who turns the tables on a condescending cruise ship's passenger after the vessel cruiser line sinks, opened in October. It pulled in just 375,000 dollars at the North American box office in its opening weekend and was quickly withdrawn from theaters.

Subject:Swept Away - DVD Cover Released.
Posted by:liquiddatura.
Time:6:58 am.

Amazon.com posted some time ago the cover to the Swept Away DVD cover. It was long thought that since the cover is so simplistic and... boring and fake-looking as all hell... that it wasn't the official release. Madonna.com says it is. It does feature partial move-poster art, and allows the illusion that Madonna is indeed the only person involved in the entire film. Yes... because that will help the film's already hazardous 'success.'

It goes on sale February 11th.

From the Daily Star:-

"Madonna has vowed never to appear on Jay Leno's Tonight show in the US again after he insulted her. He joked about her film flop Swept Away and then said that Die Another Day had taken $40 million, adding: 'If Madonna was not in it, it probably would have taken $80 million.' Ouch."

Subject:Swept Away - Low Quality CNN.com Year-End Review
Posted by:liquiddatura.
Time:3:44 am.

CNN.com wrote the following review, which is surely attempting to be develishly witty and scathing:

"Swept Away"
Sony Pictures -- Directed by Guy Ritchie
Starring: Madonna, Adriano Giannini

"Swept Away" is another remake that boggles the mind. When it comes to acting, Madonna is talent-free. She can dance, and sort of sing, but act? No, no, no, no, no! In fact, this remake of Lina Wertmuller's 1974 film is so bad, director Guy Ritchie -- also known as Mr. Madonna -- sent it straight to video in England, the country he and the missus call home. "Swept Away" isn't really a movie; it just squats on the screen, like a side dish no one ordered. Madonna is a great artist who has conquered the world on many fronts, but when it comes to acting -- girl, let it go!!!

The article featured the following photo:

Caption:Madonna, left, and Giannini are stranded in "Swept Away."

And is it my imagination or is it really disturbing that CNN of all people used three exclamation points at one time? It also just seems to bash for the sake of bashing, and written by someone in junior high; and written for the sake of decrying Madonna's acting rather than Madonna's acting in the film.
